Frequently Asked Questions
-
- Comprehensive Safety Basics: The course dives into the essentials of fall protection, like understanding fall arrest (stopping a fall) and travel restraint (preventing a fall), which are key systems for working at heights in Alberta. It’s designed to meet the province’s strict Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code, so you’re learning exactly what’s legally required.
- Practical and Theoretical Mix: You’ll get a rundown on equipment—like harnesses, lanyards, and anchors—plus how to calculate fall distances and plan rescues. It’s not just theory; it preps you for real-world scenarios across industries like construction or oil and gas.
- Legislation Focus: Since Alberta has some of the toughest fall protection rules in Canada, the course emphasizes local laws alongside standards from groups like CSA and ANSI. This ensures you’re compliant and safe on Alberta job sites.
- Certification Outcome: After passing (usually needing 70-80% on a test), you get a downloadable certificate, valid for three years. It’s a solid step toward being job-ready, though you might need hands-on evaluation later by a qualified person.
-
- Flexible Timing: Our course will take about 3 to 4 hours. You can pause and resume, so it fits your schedule, whether you’re blasting through it in one go or spreading it out.
- Self-Paced Learning: Since it’s fully online, your completion time depends on how fast you absorb the material. Interactive bits like quizzes and videos keep it engaging.
- Certification Speed: Once you pass the exam (70%, up to three attempts), you can download your certificate right away. No waiting around—just instant proof you’re trained.
- Gold Seal: This course is eligible for two Gold Seal Certification credits from the Canadian Construction Association.
-
- Legal Mandate: Yes, Alberta’s OHS Code (Part 9) requires workers to be trained in fall protection if they’re working at heights where a fall of 3 meters or more is possible, or even less if there’s a risk of unusual injury—like falling into hazardous materials. This course meets that standard.
- Employer Responsibility: Employers have to ensure you’re trained and competent, so taking this course isn’t just a good idea—it’s often their legal duty to provide or verify. It’s a proactive way to avoid fines and keep everyone safe.
- Job-Specific Needs: Not every worker needs it—only those at elevated worksites, like roofers or rig workers. But since falls are a top injury cause in Alberta (thousands of incidents yearly), many industries make it mandatory anyway.

-
- You should re-certify every 3 years.
-
- Class A fall protection isn’t a term directly used in Alberta’s OH&S Code or the “Fall Protection Alberta Edition” course but aligns with CSA Standard Z259.11 for energy absorbers and lanyards. It typically refers to a full-body harness with a dorsal (back) D-ring as part of a personal fall arrest system (PFAS), designed to stop a fall safely.
- Functionality: It’s built to arrest a fall after it happens, absorbing energy to reduce impact on your body (e.g., limiting forces to 8 kN or less), unlike restraint systems that prevent falls entirely.
- Application: Commonly used in Alberta workplaces like construction or roofing, it’s the go-to for heights over 3 meters where guardrails or nets aren’t feasible—think of it as your last line of defense.
- Standards Compliance: Equipment must meet CSA or equivalent standards (e.g., ANSI, CEN), and Alberta requires it to be inspected and anchored properly, per Part 9 of the OH&S Code.
