WHMIS 2025
Course Overview
Mandatory in Canada as of December 2025.
In Canada, the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is utilized by suppliers, employers, and workers to effectively communicate and identify the hazards linked to products in the workplace. WHMIS is in line with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), which is adopted by numerous countries worldwide.
In December 2022, changes to the Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR) introduced updates to the existing WHMIS 2015. Health Canada has established a 3-year transition period to allow users of WHMIS to implement the necessary adjustments. Please refer to the CCOHS government website page for more details.
By 14 December 2025, all WHMIS users will need to comply with the revised HPR. This WHMIS course is designed to provide you with a foundational understanding of the system, covering essential principles, worker safety, and important updates.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
- The WHMIS 2025 course isn’t a brand-new program but an updated version of Canada’s Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System training, designed to teach workers how to safely handle hazardous materials.
- It focuses on key elements like understanding labels, interpreting safety data sheets (SDSs), and recognizing hazard symbols, all aligned with the latest GHS standards that Canada adopted in revisions up to 2022. By 2025, it ensures workers know how to protect themselves in workplaces where chemicals are present.
-
- Our WHMIS 2025 course takes roughly an hour to complete depending on your pace.
- The course includes modules and a final quiz, so it’s quick yet thorough, ensuring you grasp essentials like hazard classes and emergency procedures without dragging on unnecessarily.
-
- It depends on your situation—if your certificate is recent and your workplace hasn’t changed its chemical hazards, you might not need a full redo.
- However, WHMIS training doesn’t technically expire, but employers often require refreshers every 1-2 years, especially with updates like those finalized in December 2022, which suppliers must fully implement by December 15, 2025. So, if your training predates these changes, a 2025-aligned course could be necessary.
- Plus, it’s a good idea to stay current—new hazard classes like “chemicals under pressure” mean older knowledge might miss critical safety info.
-
The 2025 changes for WHMIS in Canada aren’t a new overhaul but the completion of a transition period from amendments made in December 2022. Suppliers must fully comply with updated Hazardous Products Regulations by December 15, 2025, incorporating GHS Revisions 7 and 8. This includes refined classifications like flammable gases and a new “chemicals under pressure” category, plus updated safety data sheets and labels to enhance worker safety and global trade consistency.
