Detection and Control of Flammable and Toxic Atmospheres
Course Overview
This course provides detailed training on the detection and control of flammable and toxic atmospheres to help you remain safe while working around potentially dangerous gases. It covers both detector tube devices (bellows and piston types) and gas monitors (personal, portable, and fixed). This course meets IRP7 requirements and addresses explosive ranges, toxic atmospheres, oxygen levels, flammable substances, vapor detection, and more.
Who Should Take This Course?
Anyone entering a work site that requires gas detection equipment. Typical worksites include plant sites, drilling operations, servicing operations, pipeline operations, upstream and downstream oilfield operations, confined spaces, and other environments where hazardous gases may be present.
Course Modules
Module 1: Introduction – Overview of course objectives and importance of gas detection.
Module 2: Detector Tube Devices – Safe operation of the most common detector tube devices.
Module 3: Continuous Gas Monitors – Personal, portable, and fixed monitors; operation, maintenance, and bump testing.
Module 4: Combustible Gas Monitors – Sensor types, display features, measurement principles, and equipment challenges.
Module 5: Fixed Continuous Monitors – Functions and characteristics of fixed monitoring systems.
Module 6: Gas Testing – Overview of gas testing procedures and detection equipment use.
Module 7: Conclusion – Review of key concepts before the final exam.
Module 8: End of Course – Final exam with 20 questions; three attempts allowed; passing mark of 80%.
Online Assessment
Participants must achieve 80% on the final exam to pass. Two additional attempts are allowed if needed.
Completion Certificate
Upon successful completion, participants receive a non-transferable certificate of completion. Practical evaluation may be required in some jurisdictions to meet regulatory requirements.
Duration: ~120 minutes
